The GROW Coaching Model

Coaching is not about giving answers—it’s about unlocking potential. The GROW Coaching Model, one of the most widely used frameworks in performance and executive coaching, offers a structured yet flexible way to help individuals move from where they are to where they want to be.

Developed by Sir John Whitmore and colleagues in the late 1980s, GROW stands for Goal, Reality, Options, and Will. It’s a simple yet powerful model that creates clarity, focus, and accountability, whether in a one-to-one coaching session, team development process, or leadership dialogue.

  1. Goal
What do you want to achieve?
This phase defines the objective of the session or the longer-term aspiration. Goals should be specific, measurable, and time-bound. Coaches help clients clarify not only what they want—but why it matters.
  2. Reality
    Where are you now?
The coach invites the client to assess their current situation honestly. This includes facts, feelings, obstacles, and existing strategies. Understanding the reality builds self-awareness and removes assumptions.
  3. Options
    What could you do?
This is a creative phase. The coach encourages brainstorming without judgment, exploring a range of possibilities, resources, and perspectives. The aim is to expand thinking—not immediately solve.
  4. Will (or Way Forward)
    What will you do?
The final step transforms ideas into action. The coach supports the client in making specific commitments, identifying next steps, and anticipating potential barriers. Accountability is built here.

Why the GROW Coaching Model Works

The strength of the GROW model lies in its clarity and adaptability. It works across industries, roles, and personality types because it doesn’t prescribe solutions, it guides discovery. It’s particularly effective in:

  • Executive coaching
  • Performance reviews
  • Leadership development
  • Career transitions
  • Personal growth and life coaching

Coaches use GROW not to direct, but to facilitate powerful, reflective conversations that lead to meaningful change.
